What is Capoeira?

There are many definitions of what people would think Capoeira is. Is it a Dance? Martial Art? Acrobatics? Music Class? Language Class, History Class? It is all of these! Capoeira can be classified as an aspect of Afro-Brazilian culture expressed through a dance-like martial art that was created through experimentation, constant modification, and necessity by African and Native slaves in the Colonial era of Brazil dating back to the 1500's. The slaves would hide its fierceness from Slave Masters through stealthy and acrobatic movements, music, singing, and dance like gestures during their unwilling time spent in the Senzalas (Slave Quarters). The proven effective methods of defense, stealthiest and constant modification, Capoeira has manifested historically as a deadly martial art, a societal aspect of unity and problem solving and today as a top notch and challenging form of fitness. Capoeira has appeared in famous movies such as Önly the Strong" "The Run Down" Öcean's 12" and "The Protector" "Are We Done Yet" and the newest INDIANA JONES movie "Legend of the Crystal Skull".

Capoeira Sol Nascente, Long Branch is the first prgram of Afro-Brazilian Capoeira to exist in Monmouth County and Ocean County. The group was founded by Sub Contramestre Didi and Baiano. Also it was the first to introduce Capoeira to the shore area and is the longest standing group since 2002 in Long Branch NJ. We follow the methods taught to us by our teachers and eclectical methods experienced through application.

Cord Rank Colors

Cord colors are used as a means of advancement and knowledge that each student must attain, almost similar to traditional martial arts such and Karate and Tae Kwon Do. The students participate once a year in an initial Batizado(first time test) or Troca de Corda (cord change) in which they test their knowledge and earn their cord through demonstrations of defense movements, escapes, attacks, flourishes, and playing and singing of music in Brazilian Portuguese as well as their knowledge of some history and folklore. Different Capoeira schools have different cord colors, meaning different ranks, so don't be suprised if you see a white cord, he/she may just be a mestre, or just a beginner. Here are the cord colors for our group Capoeira Sol Nascente:
